Kayaker rescues red squirrel under attack from spawning bass in river

A man fishing on an a New Brunswick, Canada, river noticed some unusual activity in the water and ended up rescuing a red squirrel struggling with some bass

Matt Myers said he was fishing for striped bass on the Miramichi River when he saw a group of bass splashing at the surface of the water.

"I was watching some splashing and all of a sudden I looked to the side and I thought 'What is that in the middle of this spawning activity?'" Myers told CBC News.

He said he initially thought the bass were attacking a stick, but he then realized they were nipping at an animal.

"Lo and behold, it's this poor little red squirrel in the middle of all this spawning activity," Myers said. "The bass appeared to be coming up and nipping at it."

Myers used his paddle to scoop the squirrel up onto his kayak and gave it a ride back to shore.

He said the fish had likely confused the squirrel's splashing for a female preparing to lay her eggs.

"I don't think they were trying to eat it," Myers said.

Joe Grisamore set his first record in 2020, when his fan Mohawk was measured at 42.5 inches tall.

Grisamore said his stylist, Kay Jettmann, and his wife, Laura Grisamore, helped him mold his now 50.9-inch hair into the world's tallest spike Mohawk.

"Kay and I had worked for a long time, as far as how to make this all happen," Grisamore told KARE-TV. "We just [did] it without ratting it, laying on the floor -- different hair sprays -- I don't know, it was a big trial and error."

Grisamore's hair now holds two Guinness records.

"Of the two titles that exist, I now hold them both," Grisamore said. "Laura wanted me to be humble and not do the second one. I figured if it's out there and it exists, let's make it happen

Wildlife officials in Colorado shared photos of a rare piebald squirrel spotted in a tree near Denver.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Northeast Region said in a Twitter post that Jerry Baines spotted the unusually-colored squirrel west of Denver and snapped photos.

The piebald squirrel has normal brown and gray fur on its tail and underside, but white fur on its head and back.

"That is a genetic mutation causing varying amounts of white hair. Some can be almost pure white while others carry just patches of white," the department tweeted.

Rene Kobeitri, owner of the Rim Cafe, recruited a team of chefs to build a sandwich that measured more than two-blocks-long Monday night.

"I said this year, 'I want to make it big,'" Kobeitri told WCAU-TV. "Make a big party for everyone, so why not bring everyone together and have a couple thousand people?"

Geno Vento, owner of Geno's and a friend of Kobeitri, said several different varieties of cheesesteak were included.

"A ravioli cheesesteak, marinara cheesesteak, a Spanish cheesesteak," Vento said.

The final sandwich beat the team's goal of 480 feet.

Kobeitri said the cheesesteak will be submitted for an official Guinness World Record, but whether or not it is accepted, he already plans to outdo his accomplishment.

"Next one is going to be more crazy, get ready baby," Kobeitri said. "And I'm going to make it happen!"

Police in New York said a kitten trapped under a vehicle went through a car wash before being discovered by the driver and rescued by authorities.

The Cheektowaga Police Department said the driver had made an approximately 10-mile drive from Buffalo to Cheektowaga, gone through a car wash and parked at a mall before a bystander heard the kitten meowing in distress under the vehicle.

A pair of police officers were called to the scene and climbed under the vehicle to rescue the feline.

The owner of the vehicle said she did not know where the kitten could have come from, as she does not own a cat.

The kitten was taken to the SPCA for care.

An Illinois couple said they received an unusual surprise when their pregnant cow gave birth to triplets -- beating incredible odds.

Todd and Cynthia Carlson of Amboy said they knew their cow, Minnie, was giving birth on the night of May 15, but they decided to allow nature to take its course and went to bed.

The couple said they were shocked when they went to visit Minnie the next morning and discovered she had given birth to three calves.

Experts said there is only a 1 in 105,000 chance that a pregnant cow will have triplets, and Minnie's situation is even more unusual because all three calves survived.

"Several people that we've asked that have had cows forever -- their entire lives, and they're in their 60s -- never saw a set of triplets," Cynthia Carlson told WTVO-TV.

The couple named the calves after characters from sitcom Friends, but with some cow puns thrown in: Phoe-Beef Buffay, Ross Gelded and Joey Tri-beef-ani.

A motorist was arrested after an officer observed him in the backseat of a Tesla traveling on a San Francisco Bay Area freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

California Tesla Driver Arrested While Riding In Backseat

Param Sharma, 25, was arrested for alleged reckless driving and disobeying a peace officer, the highway patrol said in a statement Tuesday.

Multiple 911 calls Monday evening reported a person seated in the backseat of a Tesla Model 3 without anyone in the driver’s seat while the vehicle traveled on Interstate 80 across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

A highway patrol motorcycle officer spotted the Tesla, confirmed the solo occupant was in the backseat, took action to stop the car and saw the occupant move to the driver’s seat before the car stopped, said the statement from the highway patrol, known as CHP.

“Prior to this arrest, members of the public had captured video of someone resembling Sharma operating his vehicle in the same reckless manner, and the CHP’s Oakland Area had cited Sharma on April 27 for similar behavior,” the statement said.

The CHP said the incident remains under investigation. The statement did not say whether officials determined whether the Tesla was operating on the company’s “Autopilot” system, which can keep a car centered in its lane and a safe distance behind vehicles in front of it.

But it’s likely that either Autopilot or Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” systems were operating for the driver to be in the back seat. Tesla is allowing a limited number of owners to test its self-driving system, but it’s not clear if Sharma was one of them. A message was left Wednesday seeking comment from Tesla.

Tesla says on its website and in owners manuals that both systems are not fully autonomous, and that drivers must be ready to intervene at any time.

But drivers have repeatedly zoned out with Autopilot in use, resulting in at least three U.S. deaths when neither the system nor the driver stopped for obstacles in the road.

Tesla has a system to monitor drivers to make sure they’re paying attention by detecting force from hands on the steering wheel.

The system will issue warnings and eventually shut the car down if it doesn’t detect hands. But critics have said Tesla’s system is easy to fool and can take as long as a minute to shut down. Consumer Reports said in April that it was able to easily trick a Tesla into driving in Autopilot mode with no one at the wheel.

Sharma was released from Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail on Tuesday.

The KTVU television station reported that Sharma said in an interview that riding in the backseat isn’t dangerous and he will continue it.

“I’m gonna go in the back seat right now. You feel me? I’m waiting for my car to charge,” Sharma told the station.

“Elon Musk really knows what he’s doing and I think people are tripping and they’re scared,” he said, referring to the Tesla founder.

KTVU reported that Sharma characterized himself as being above the blue-collar world.

“I don’t drive and I don’t fill up gas. I am a gold collar,” he said.

It’s a type of anglerfish that dwells thousands of feet below the surface, Davey’s Locker Sportfishing noted in a post.

The fish isn’t uncommon in the ocean’s dark depths, but it’s highly unusual to see it perfectly preserved on a Southern California beach, the fishing company said.

The first spine of its dorsal fins, the illicium, serves as a funky overhead lamp with a phosphorescent bulb on the end to attract its prey.

The California Department of Fish & Wildlife now reportedly has the 18-inch carcass.

Fun fact about the Pacific footballfish: Males are up to 10 times smaller than females and fuse themselves to their mate to serve “as an easily accessible source of sperm,” according to the California Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Bruce Robison of Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute said anglerfish are “among the most rarely seen of all deep-sea fishes,” according to For the Win.

The corpse flower, scientifically known as amorphophallus titanum, belongs to gardener Solomon Leyva, who brought his plant to the old Art Deco gas station in Alameda to share it with the community.

The plant, which only blooms once every several years, is known as the corpse flower due to the pungent odor it releases while blooming.

"It produces a tree-like looking plant with a really wide canopy," Leyva told KGO-TV. "It produces it over and over every year until the bulb has sort of enough energy for it to bloom. This can take 10 years, this can take 15, this can take 20."

Leyva said he wanted the community to have the chance to get up close and personal with the plant, which normally can only be seen blooming at facilities where the public is kept separated from the plants by barriers.

"I think everyone's tripping out that they can walk up and wiggle it and smell it. A lot of fun for everybody," he told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Leyva estimated at least 1,400 people had lined up to see the plant.

The team said a veterinarian was brought to the scene and sedated the horse to keep him calm while firefighters trimmed the branches around him.

"Once the branches were trimmed, the crews used animal rescue equipment to lift the horse out of the gap and to safe ground," a fire service spokesman told the East Anglian Daily Times.

"The horse is safely back on all fours and the vet is staying with the animal until the full effects of the sedation have worn off."

A Maryland museum said archaeologists searching for the location of an early English settlement uncovered a rare clue: a silver coin dating from the 17th century.

Travis Parno, director of research and collections at the Historic St. Mary's City museum, said archaeologists working to locate the original site of St. Mary's Fort, one of the earliest English settlements in North America, found the silver coin bearing the image of King Charles I.

"It didn't exactly have the date printed on it, but it was pretty much the next best thing," Parno told CNN. "It had a maker's mark that was only used in 1633 and 1634, so it might as well have had the date printed on it, to be honest."

Parno said the team has now identified the location of the fort, which was first settled around the same time the coin was minted.

"At this point, we've got a confluence of data that says this is without a doubt, the remains of St. Mary's Fort," Parno said. "The coin definitely helped. It was kind of like the cherry on top."

Parno said the coin was an unusual find, as goods, services and land were more often purchased at the time using tobacco.

Excavation efforts at the site of the fort are ongoing.

A 46-year-old Chicago man who has been battling Parkinson's disease for nearly 20 years broke a Guinness World Record by performing 30 chest-to-ground burpees in 1 minute.

Jimmy Choi, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 27, said he used his love of athletic activities to manage the condition, a brain disorder that leads to uncontrollable shaking, muscle stiffness and imbalance.

Choi said he started practicing burpees as a means of protecting himself from falls while training for marathons.

"When you look at it, a burpee is a controlled fall to the ground and then pushing myself back up so I can do it all over again. It was my desire to learn a safety skill for my situation that led me to add burpees to my daily routine," he told Guinness World Records.

Choi successfully broke the Guinness World Record for most chest-to-ground burpees in 1 minute when he completed 30 in the allotted time.

The athlete, who has competed on NBC Sport's American Ninja Warrior five times, said he wants his record to show others with brain disorders and similar illness that they "can still thrive and accomplish things that most people thought only 100% healthy people can do."

2,000-pound rare rock unearthed at Oregon construction site

A worker at an Oregon construction site discovered a 2,000-pound rare rock believed to have arrived in the state on a glacier 15,000 years ago.

Jacob Parker said he was working at the site of the new Lakeridge Middle School in Lake Oswego when an unusual rock excavated by the crew caught his eye.

Parker used a rock identifying app that warned him the find might be radioactive, so he called in Scott Burns, a geologist from Portland State University.

Burns said the stone wasn't radioactive, but is an extremely rare rock known as rhyolite.

Rhyolite is created by layers of cooling lava close to the Earth's surface. Only one other piece of rhyolite has been discovered in Oregon previously.

"Basically, this is just a very, very rare rock," Burns told KATU-TV.

The Tualatin Heritage Center, which took the rock for display as part of its Ice Age flood exhibit, said the rock likely formed in Montana or Canada and came to Oregon as part of a glacier during the Missoula Flood about 15,000 years ago.

"We believe it's an ice-rafted glacial erratic," Burns said in a release on the Tualatin Heritage Center's website.

"That is, it fell onto the glaciers up in British Columbia, Alberta, Canada or Montana and then was part of the dam that blew apart in the Missoula Floods and it floated down here and was then dropped."

Terry Rush, a greeter who has worked at the Dixie Highway Kroger store for about a year, said he was cleaning up inside the store when he made an unexpected discovery.

"I'm old," Rush told WDRB-TV. "I hate seeing trash on the floor, and I'm always picking it up."

Rush said he quickly discovered the slip of paper on the floor was more valuable than the usual trash he picks up -- it was a $1,000 money order.

"A bare check, which anybody could've cashed," he said. "And I immediately took it to the service desk."

A man called the store a short time later to report losing the money order. The caller said he was shocked to learn someone had turned it in, and he wanted to thank Rush in person.

"He contacted the store," Rush said. "Everything else was up to him. He rifled through and found out who I was and came up to talk to me. He was quite emotional."

Rush said the man was in tears as he thanked him.

"I'm not ashamed to say it," Rush said. "I cried too."

Rush said he feels that he was only doing his job.

"It's what this job is meant to do," he said. "That's what really this is all about. When times get tough, we need to be a little nicer. And that's all it is."

Employees of Vietnam Airlines recently facilitated a similar reunion between a forgetful customer and some valuable lost property. The flight crew was cleaning the plane after a flight from Hanoi to Da Nang when they found a wallet containing $45,000 cash.

The crew took their discovery to the airport's lost and found counter, where employees were able to use identifying information from the wallet to contact the grateful owner.

The owner of a 9-month-old tiger seen loose in a Texas neighborhood last week has surrendered the animal to authorities, the Houston Police Department said Saturday night.

"We are happy to report that the missing tiger seen in a Houston neighborhood last week has been found and appears to be unharmed," the department tweeted.

The tiger, named India, was immediately placed in the city's animal shelter and is expected to be transported to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch wildlife sanctuary on Sunday, CNN reported.

Gia Cuevas and her husband, Victor Hugo Cuevas, are the owners of the tiger.

Gia Cuevas brought the animal to authorities Saturday and is not facing criminal charges at this time.

But HPD Commander Ron Borza emphasized in a news conference Saturday night that it is illegal, as well as a bad idea, to keep tigers as pets in Houston.

"In no way, shape or form should you have an animal like that in your household," Borza said. "That animal can get to 600 pounds. It still had his claws, and it could do a lot of damage if he decided to."

ABC News said India weighs about 175 pounds.

The tiger's existence was first made known to authorities by people who saw it and warned their neighbors via the Nextdoor app that the enormous cat was on the loose.

Video showed Victor Hugo Cuevas, 26, approaching the animal and taking it into the house from which it apparently escaped.

Victor Hugo Cuevas fled the scene with the tiger as police arrived to investigate.

He remains in custody for alleged felony evading arrest. His bond was also revoked on an unrelated 2017 murder charge.

India was not with Victor Hugo Cueva when he was arrested.

Workers doing renovations on a cafe in England made a surprising discovery inside the ceiling -- a menu from the restaurant that occupied the building in 1913

Natalie Haywood, owner of Leaf in Liverpool, said workers doing renovations on the building found a menu for Yamen Cafe and Tea Rooms, dated Jan. 15, 1913, in the rafters.

Haywood said the workers also found a waiter's hat embroidered with the word "Yaman" and the instructions for a card game called "whist and bottles."

"Down came fluttering from the ceiling this menu from 108 years ago. It's in absolutely unbelievable condition," Haywood told CNN.

Haywood told the BBC the menu is "like a time capsule hidden in the walls."

She said Leaf plans to try to recreate some of the dishes listed on the menu.

"To see what they were doing then, how forward-thinking and creative as a restaurant, is so inspiring," she said.

The force appealed for any information about or sightings of Darius, who is gray-brown and 129 centimeters (4 feet, 3 inches) long at full stretch. He holds the Guinness World Records citation for the world’s longest rabbit. Rabbits of his type are known to weigh about 15 to 20 pounds (7 to 9 kilograms).

It’s not unusual for rocks and other debris to crash through a windshield and injure a driver or passenger — but a turtle?

A 71-year-old woman riding with her daughter on Florida’s Interstate 95 suffered a gashed forehead Wednesday when a turtle smashed through the windshield of their car, striking her, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports.

The daughter pulled over and got help from another motorist. According to a 911 recording, both were surprised by what they found.

“There is a turtle in there,” the man can be overheard saying.

“A turtle!” the daughter exclaimed. “An actual turtle?”

The gash drew a lot of blood, but the woman was not seriously hurt. The turtle was likely crossing the interstate and got knocked into the air by another vehicle.

“I swear to God this lady has the worst luck of anything,” the daughter told the 911 operator as she tended to her injured mother.

The turtle, on the other hand, had the best luck of anything — it just had a few scratches on its shell and was released back into the nearby woods, Port Orange police officer Andre Fleming said.

The waterfowl made a splash on Twitter after someone made a false claim about him. But the tweets will still quack you up.

Long Boi the duck certainly is long, but he may not be the longest boi.

On Thursday a photo of a duck that lives near University of York in England — and dubbed Long Boi by some adoring students — went viral after a tweet claimed that he was “The tallest mallard duck to have ever lived (since records began).”

The claim, which seems to have stemmed from Reddit, is unfortunately not true, which Snopes was quick to point out.

Long Boi is not a full mallard, according to the duck’s Instagram account; he is actually a cross between a mallard and an Indian Runner, which is a larger species of bird. The Twitter caption also claims that Long Boi stands over “1m tall (3.5ft)” tall. But the University of York students who run Long Boi’s Instagram account (who said they wanted to remain anonymous because “long boi is truly the star of the show”) told HuffPost via Instagram that they measured the fowl.

He is only 70 centimeters (about 28 inches) tall, according to the students. And sure, mallards are typically 24 inches in length, but Long Boi is half Indian Runner — and they grow to be about 32 inches high.

Snopes also found that there is no database that tracks the height of mallard ducks.

Yet, despite all this, people still had a lot of fun with Long Boi’s viral photo ― and the false information.

Long Boi has had a real underdog, er, underduck story as well. The students who run his fan account told HuffPost that Long Boi just appeared on campus a few years ago and they “believe he was abandoned here as an unwanted pet.”

“When we first saw him he didn’t really fit in with the other ducks and was shunned by them a bit,” they said.

The students said they began feeding him because he used to hang out near their dorms. And it seems like the nurturing helped.

“Now he has really flourished and integrated with the others,” they told HuffPost. “He’s quite friendly and loves being fed by visitors ... in fact our on-campus shop even stocks bird seed specifically for all the waterfowl.”

Thanks to the bird’s stature and more outgoing personality, Long Boi became a sensation on campus. And in 2018, the duck got his own Instagram account.

“We thought it would be fun to share his photos on Instagram for others to see,” the students said. Now other Long Boi fans contribute their photos to the duck’s account.

Kangaroos can learn to communicate with humans similar to how domesticated dogs do, by using their gaze to "point" and ask for help, researchers said in a study published on Wednesday.

The study involved 11 kangaroos that lived in captivity but had not been domesticated. Ten of the 11 marsupials intently gazed at researchers when they were unable to open a box with food, according to the report. Nine alternately looked at the human and at the container, as a way of pointing or gesturing toward the object.

"We interpreted this as a deliberate form of communication, a request for help," Alan McElligott, the Irish researcher who led the study, told Reuters in a call from Hong Kong.

"Wild species are not really expected to behave as those subjects were, and that's why it is surprising."

The findings challenge the notion that only domesticated animals such as dogs, horses or goats communicate with humans, and suggests many more animals could grasp how to convey meaning to humans, the paper asserts.

"We've previously thought only domesticated animals try to ask for help with a problem. But kangaroos do it too," concluded co-researcher Alexandra Green from the University of Sydney.

Here’s one of those real weird animals we’re grateful not to look like! The male Proboscis Monkey has a huge nose which – get this – females dig and end up choosing the males with the bigger ones to have sexual intercourse with. This fleshy nose hangs down the mouth of the monkey, is shaped like a bell and is reddish in color – all of which contribute to give it a little bit of a drunkard look.

The females also have big noses but not anything like the males. On top on being used for sexual attraction the big nose of the male functions as a reverberating chamber that enables him to amplify the sounds he makes. He is thus able to put out loud and wild warning shrieks or seduce the females with powerful sounds.

Not the mother of all pot-bellies – but still…

As if its oversize nose wasn’t enough of a distinctive feature to make him one of the most weird looking animals around, the Proboscis Monkey also sports a fairly large pot belly accounting for over ¼ of its weight which can go up to about 53 pounds. Yet, they only eat leaves, seeds and fruits. Their tails are long and white and distinctive-looking as well. These monkeys have a preference to dwell in trees for most of the day although they are also excellent swimmers and do spend a lot of time in water.

It’s an old-fashioned creature that lives in harems

These monkeys typically live in harem-style situations where there is several females for one male. Males that have no females will be solitary or band in bachelor herds until they get their own harem. These harem groups tend to be small and no more than 5 to 10 monkeys usually stick together except when groups meet and as many as 30 to 60 monkeys can be seen interacting with each other. Females often act as leaders of these groups and coordinate feedings. There is sometimes exchanges between males and females moving from one group to another.

You can find them in Asia

These strange animals are mainly found on the island of Borneo in South-Asia. They are also present in Malaysia and related primates are present in Japan, China and elsewhere in south-east Asia. They live in mangroves, forests and swamps.

Man is destroying it monkeys

Unfortunately, there are only about 1000 to 3000 such monkeys known to remain alive in the wild as the continual loss of their natural habitat and continued hunting has dramatically reduced their numbers in the past century. The loss of habitat is mainly due to plantations and housing which have necessitated a clearing of the land. Borneo and Malaysia have now made these weird animals a protected species by law.

australian frilled neck lizard

Australian frilled neck lizard

The Frilled Lizard can be quite funny-looking and is one of the most weird animals to look at when it is running! This usually solitary beast will begin to run on all four legs before getting up on its hind ones, open up its mouth (which causes the frill around its head to spread open like an umbrella) and hiss maddeningly as it reaches surprising speed. The weird thing about it is that

this is not always its attack mode but also how it escapes predators. If it cannot escape a fight it will hit its tail on the ground and jump forward in defiance to finally resort to biting if need be. They are not known for being dangerous to humans.

The Frilled Lizard’s skin is made of scales and it belongs to the dragon family of lizards. The opened frills display a bright orange color and is quite spectacular. The beast will grow to a maximum length of 95 cm – which is mostly due to its tail. It spends the great majority of its time in trees (the tallest possible) with which they blend in rather easily because they are of the same range of colors as the barks.

These strange animals are disappearing….

Nowadays, this lizard is found mainly in northern Australia where there is little population and it used to be featured on two-cents coins in that country. It used to be found on the entire island but its natural habitat has suffered much with the advent of man. It is now a protected species by law in Australia. It is found in New Guinea as well.

Sun loving dragon freaks, that’s what they are

Being cold blooded, these weird animals spend a lot of time in the sun as they the need the warmth to function properly. Frilled Lizards are active by day and nourish themselves mainly with insects such as caterpillars. They are in turn the food of eagles, owls, snakes and other large predators. Aborigines used to hunt them down for food as well.

They mate during the wet season, which begins in September in Australia. When not mating, males and females hardly interact with each other. The males are ferociously territorial – especially when courting females.

How about letting these weird looking animals live in the wild?

It is unknown how old they are able to live in the wild but in captivity they usually last from 15 to 20 years – not that there are any good reasons to remove these beautifully weird animals from nature and put them in cages, if you ask us. Besides, look at them, they are prone to tantrums.

A 12-year-old Illinois boy said shortages of medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic inspired him to design his own ventilator using Lego pieces.

Anthony Hartman, a Winnetka seventh-grader, said he heard about projects to create ventilators to help offset shortages and decided to try to make one himself using a Lego Mindstorm EV3 robotics kit.

"I saw a bunch of universities making respirator units that were cheaper and more affordable. I wanted to make my own version with a twist, which was the Lego piece," Anthony told WLS-TV.

Anthony entered his creation, which he dubbed the EVentilator2020, into the Kids Think Tank contest. He did not win the competition, but he earned praise from the event organizers.

Anthony said he hopes to partner with Lego to make his EVentilator2020 available to medical professionals in rural areas.

A company announced it is seeking "nap reviewers" to get paid $1,500 each to take daily naps for 30 days and document the experience.

EachNight.com, which offers comparisons of mattresses, bedding and other items, said it is researching the "pros and cons of napping" and is seeking a team of "nap reviewers" to document their mid-day rests.

"Over the course of 30 days, our dedicated nappers will be required to take part in a variety of experiments testing out theories such as the best nap duration for feeling refreshed, the effects of napping on overall levels of fatigue, and the effects of napping on memory, motivation and productivity," the company said.

The nap reviewers will be required to participate in video calls before and after each nap to document the experience.

Applications for the five positions are being accepted through May 31 on the company's website.

Giant coconut crab

From the set of the next Alien movie

Looking like some alien creature right out of a science-fiction movie or a sea beast from your worst nightmares, these weird animals are found around tropical islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans. The biggest of these crabs to have been reported was said to measure 6 feet wide and weigh more than 30 pounds. Most of them, however, will weigh around 9 pounds.

It does what it wants! Don’t try to stop it!

This freak of nature is often called ‘palm thief’ and ‘robber crab’ because it appears they are fond of stealing shiny things from surrounding huts and houses. Silver jewelry and kitchen pots have been known to disappear when they are around. They achieve this even though they have poor eyesight and make their way around sensing vibrations.

Coconut Lover

As it cannot swim, the Giant Coconut Crab lives on land and got its name for its propensity to climb up coconut tress. It makes good use of its ability to get up those trees and regularly cuts down the coconuts which it will gather back down and usually open them up with its powerful claws. It has also been reported that the crab sometimes take an unopened coconut with its claws, bring it back up the tree and drop it on the ground to break it.

These weird looking animals come out mostly at night when predators are not susceptible to catch them and when the temperature is cooler. They may come out during the daytime if it is raining or if the air is moist. They live in underground hideaways or in rock crevices. Not one to waste what it takes from nature, the Giant Coconut Crab will make it bed with the husk fibers of coconuts it eats.

Don’t let them grab your balls

If you come across one of them weird animals be careful. When they catch something with their claws they do not usually let go easily. Otherwise, it is more the crab itself which needs to be wary of humans as local islanders use it as a delicacy food and even as an aphrodisiac. Local children are known to play with the crabs so they must not be so hostile despite their impressive size.

While not officially an endangered species, the Giant Coconut Crab population has – like most animals – suffered from habitat loss and the increasing presence of man on the planet. They are still found in large numbers on the Cook Islands or in cages in Japan where there seems to be a market for p etc Giant Coconut Crabs – bad!
