Some things never go out of style…

Do bearded monkeys the size of large rats qualify as strange animals? Yes they do. It also helps to make them weird that they are supposedly named after the German emperor Wilhelm II because of its likeness to the monarch. Yes, mustaches like that were once in fashion amongst humans – but that was a while ago, Wilhelm died in 1941. In any case, even though it was a joke the name has stuck within scientific circles and has been used ever since to designate this monkey. They look more like Asian sages, if you ask us.

The Emperor Tamarin is a nervous little creature constantly moving and leaping about in the trees. They are swift and able to make rather remarkable leaps between branches and are known to jump down from amazing heights without injury – good for them.

Matriarchy? Strange animals do what they want!

They usually live in small groups in which the oldest female is the leader. All adults take care of children including males which had nothing to do with getting the female pregnant. Interestingly, these strange looking animals like to hang out with other kinds of monkeys – possibly to team up against predators. They themselves may appear harmless but these speedy little buggers will rob eggs from bird nests. Being that agile, there is no stopping them. Otherwise they will look for a few delicious insects or a cut in a tree in which they can get the sap from. They also eat fruits and plants.

We’ve heard this before

The tropical rain forests of South America are hosting these strange animals but alas as seems to be the case with so many species today, they are becoming endangered mainly due to loss of habitat (it’s all the logging going on in the rain forests). What are we going to do when the only animals left will be those we engineer and raise for food consumption – no, it’s not a pretty picture. In another display of insanity it seems they are also somewhat popular as pets amongst humans.

Making more of them Emperor Tamarin

In these circumstances it is fortunate that the Emperor Tamarin reaches sexual maturity after only 16 months. While they manage to survive the breeding period usually culminates with the birth of twins that are raised communally. The gestation period itself will last between 4 and 5 months and if everything goes well, these strange animals will live on for 15 years (on average).
