A pair of Colombian farmers are now Guinness World Record holders after they grew a massive mango weighing 9.36 pounds.

German Orlando Novoa Barrera and Reina Maria Marroquin grew the mango at San Martin farm in the Boyaca area of Guayata.

The pair said they could tell early on that the mango was growing much larger than the other fruits on their tree. Barrera said his daughter, Dabegy, suggested the mango could be a new world record after it was harvested and weighed.

The 9.36-pound mango took the title of the world's heaviest from a 7.57-pound mango grown in 2009 in the Philippines.

"Our goal with this Guinness World Records title is to show to the world that in Colombia we are humble, hardworking people who love the countryside and that the land that is cultivated with love produces great fruits. In addition, this represents in times of pandemic a message of hope and joy for our people," Barrera told Guinness World Records.

Barrera and Marroquin said they ended up serving the mango to their family.

"It was very delicious and healthy inside, but before that, we made a mold out of it to make a replica and donate it to the municipality to be recorded in history," Barrera said.

A 12-year-old North Carolina boy who took a few extra classes in his spare time during the COVID-19 pandemic is now preparing to graduate high school and college in the same week.

Mike Wimmer, 12, of Salisbury, will graduate Rowan-Cabarrus Community College with an associate's degree May 21 and will graduate Concord Academy High School just seven days later May 28.

Wimmer has a 4.0 GPA at the college and a 5.45 GPA in high school, earning him the role of his class valedictorian.

"I went through all of the grades in school at a faster pace," Wimmer told WCNC-TV. "I'm like a sponge, I take in knowledge very fast."

Wimmer said he had some extra time during the COVID-19 pandemic and discovered that if he added just a couple of extra classes he could graduate from both schools at the same time. He ended up completing the equivalent of two years of high school and two years of community college classes in a single year.

The 12-year-old said his lifelong interest in technology and robots led him to create his own start-up, Reflect Social, which aims to simplify how smart home technology works.

"My entrepreneurial goal is to build technology that enables people to live better lives," Wimmer told CNN.

The boy said he is now considering his next options, which could include continuing with school, accepting various job offers or pursuing a fellowship to grow his start-up.

Wimmer said that amid his academic and entrepreneurial pursuits, he still makes time for activities like basketball and building Lego sets.

"A lot of people think I've given up my childhood or somehow lost it," Wimmer said, "and I say to them that I'm having the time of my life."

A Las Vegas couple said workers digging behind their home for a pool installation made a surprising discovery: a set of bones that could be up to 14,000 years old.

Matt Perkins, who recently moved to Las Vegas with his husband, said they woke up Monday morning to find Las Vegas police officers were speaking with the workers digging out the hole for their backyard pool.

"It kind of freaked us out," Perkins told the Las Vegas Review-Journal of learning the workers had found buried bones.

Perkins said his mind was eased when the police determined the bones, found about 4-5 feet under the surface, were not from a human -- and were likely thousands of years old.

"We had joked on Friday that while they started digging, 'Oh great maybe they will find a dinosaur for us and it will pay for our pool,'" Perkins told KTNV-TV.

Perkins and his husband contacted Joshua Bonde, director of research at the Nevada Science Center, and he visited the site Tuesday.

Bonde said the bones likely came from a horse or other large animal. He said the bones could be up to 14,000 years old -- dating from the earth's most recent ice age.

"What we found was when they were excavating the backyard pool, they were cutting through ice age layers of sediment and sure enough they had a skeleton of an animal," Perkins said.

Perkins said he is now working on a plan to have the bones removed and turned over to Bonde before the concrete is poured for the pool.

A professional soccer team from Toronto had their practice in Florida interrupted by "a massive alligator" that invaded the field.

Toronto FC was holding a closed practice Monday on a field in Orlando when the alligator wandered out onto the grass.

The team posted a video to YouTube showing players giving the unusual visitor a wide berth.

"All I can tell you is this -- there was an alligator, a massive alligator," Toronto coach Chris Armas told Sky Sports. "And my players are running towards the alligator as I went the other way. Listen we talk about fearless and aggressive round here, but I thought we would not think about that at that moment."

The team was preparing to face Mexico's Cruz Azul in Tuesday's Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match.

Animal rescuers in Britain said an Ikea shopper returned to their home and discovered a potted plant they purchased at the furniture store had a stowaway -- a gecko lizard.

The RSPCA said the shopper bought the plant from the Ikea store in Exeter and returned home to find a gecko was hiding among the leaves.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Clara Scully responded to the home to safely capture the lizard.

"A member of the public got more than they bargained for with this plant. This little fella was hidden in the leaves! He is now safe awaiting transfer for his new home by one of our exotic officers," Scully said.

The RSPCA said the gecko is native to warmer climates and would likely not survive in the wild in Britain.

NFL star Rob Gronkowski returned to his alma mater, the University of Arizona, to break a world record by catching a football dropped from a helicopter 600 feet above the ground.

Gronkowski, who was serving as an honorary coach alongside former New England Patriots teammate Tedy Bruschi for the ASU Wildcats' game Saturday, donned a jersey bearing his old university No. 48 to make the Guinness World Record-breaking catch.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneer made the catch on his third attempt, celebrating with his trademark "Gronk Spike."

"Every time you step on the field, you've got to raise that bar to another level, baby," CNN quoted Gronkowski as saying after the catch. "And I just raised that bar to this level."

Police in Florida said they captured a lemur spotted wandering loose in a neighborhood -- but another of the primates is still at large.

The Davie Police Department said Friday a lemur had been captured in a Southwest Ranches neighborhood and a second lemur was believed to still be on the loose in the area.

The lemurs were first spotted Thursday in Cooper City, police said.

Police said they have not yet determined the origin of the animals and are asking the owner of the African primates to come forward.

The captured lemur was taken to a licensed facility for care while the investigation is ongoing.

Lemurs are legal to keep as pets in Florida with a permit from the state. Officials said the owner of the escaped lemur could face a citation if they are found to have been keeping the exotic pets without a permit.

Police in Connecticut said an escaped cow led its owner and officers on an hours-long chase through several neighborhoods.

The Fairfield Police Department said a call came in about midnight related to a loose cow in an intersection. Officers pursued the bovine alongside the animal's owner.

The cow led its pursuers on an hours-long chase, and was photographed walking past the Country Cow Deli.

The animal was corralled about 2 miles from where it initially was spotted. It sat down, refusing to move for more than an hour. Police said the bovine eventually was returned to its owner's home.

Giant water monitor lizard surprises beach visitors in Thailand|interesting news|

Swimmers at a Thailand beach were shocked when a 5-foot water monitor lizard emerged from the woods and took a swim alongside some humans.

Nam Sudarat, a visitor to the beach on the island of Ko Hong, captured video as the monitor lizard swam just feet away from human swimmers.

Sudarat said the lizard appeared to ignore the humans as it swam through the water.

Local wildlife officials said they are familiar with the lizard, which they said is a male known to visit the beach sometimes to collect food scraps. They said the lizard is known to be friendly and does not post a danger to beachgoers.

The lizard encounter took place just weeks after a water monitor wandered into a 7-Eleven store in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, and climbed the shelves before being removed by authorities.

Wildlife officials in Iowa said the oldest known female muskie in the state was caught after 20 years -- apparently dodging capture nearly 2,000 times in that time.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said the 46-inch female muskellunge -- better known as a muskie -- was caught in a Fisheries Bureau net 20 years to the day after the last time it was encountered by officials.

The 25-year-old fish is the oldest known muskie living in Iowa waters, officials said.

The fish, which was 33.4 inches long when it was first netted, managed to evade nearly 2,000 capture attempts during those 20 years, officials said.

"A total of 1,996 net sets were conducted from 2002-2020 within the Okoboji lake chain, and that fish was never recaptured. This year, as part of our broodstock collection, we recaptured her for the first time since 2001," fisheries research biologist Jonathan Meerbeek told McClatchy News.

Meerbeek said it's highly unusual for a muskie to be so elusive.

"The lack of capture is also intriguing to us. Fish that are 15 years old or older often have been in the hatchery several times," he said.

The elusive muskie is now back in the water, officials said.
