New York woman receives more than 150 packages she didn't order

A New York woman who received more than 150 Amazon packages filled with mask brackets she didn't order said she is donating the inventory to hospitals after the mistake was sorted by the company.

Jillian Cannan of Buffalo said the packages began arriving June 5, and she didn't realize there was anything unusual about them until she took a closer look.

"I thought my business partner had ordered something for our studio that we were waiting for on backorder," she told CNN. "So I opened them up to condense the boxes and I realized they were mask brackets."

Cannan said she and her business partner hadn't ordered any mask brackets, and she soon realized the boxes bore her address, but not her name.

"At first I was convinced that it was a scam, or maybe someone trying to clear out their warehouse," Cannan told NBC News. "But because all of the items were the same, I don't think that's the case here. "

Cannan said the boxes continued to arrive via Amazon delivery, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service.

She said she was in frequent contact with Amazon as the packages continued to arrive in increasing numbers.

"Then they started coming by freight trucks on pallets in our driveway," she said.

Cannan said she received more than 150 packages -- containing thousands of mask brackets -- before Amazon managed to sort out the mistake. The company said the intended recipient would be getting their own mask brackets, and told Cannan she could keep what had already arrived at her home.

Cannan, who owns a DIY and creative studio, said she decided to use the child-size brackets to create DIY mask kits to distribute to children at local hospitals. She said Amazon agreed to donate the rest of the supplies she needs for the kits to compensate her for the inconvenience.

The adult-sized brackets will also be donated to hospitals, she said.

The Nizhne-Svirsky Nature Reserve in Leningrad Oblast said in a Facebook post that the black woodpecker, nicknamed Zhelna by researchers, apparently was hunting for insects when it unintentionally committed "vandalism" on the camera.

The reserve shared video of the woodpecker methodically pecking away at the camera until it broke.

"Zhelna quickly discovered the camouflaged device and for several days methodically hit the camera," the post said.

The reserve said the camera has been removed for repairs and likely will be out of commission for some time.

A Chicago man who jumped into Lake Michigan to treat a hangover in June 2020 has now jumped into the lake for 365 consecutive days.

"I started jumping in Lake Michigan on June 13 [2020], that was the primary day, and therefore the first day I decreased here was because i used to be hungover. And it felt so good I just started doing it a day ," O'Conor told WLS-TV.

O'Conor said he found jumping into the lake was an honest thanks to clear his mind of the world's ills.

"You know, with everything that was happening, you mention June, it had been the pandemic and therefore the refore the politics and the protests, just all of that, I could come down here and dive within the water and it might just quite clear it, clear the palette and cleanse the day, start anew," he said.

O'Conor said the winter months were the foremost difficult of his routine, thanks to the frequently that he incurred cuts and scrapes from hacking through the ice to form an outsized enough hole for him to succeed in the water.

O'Conor ended up partnering with an area group to boost money for live music venues that took a financial beating from the pandemic.

"I'm an enormous fan of live music and just wanted to support the local venues so I partnered up with Civl Chicago, the Chicago independent venue league, and just of these small venues that basically are suffering from COVID," he said. "They were the primary to shut and they'll be the last to reopen. And so, i assumed it had been important to offer back to the community that has given me such a lot joy over the years. So I teamed with them and other people started donating directly ."

White snake on the loose in Manitoba neighborhood

Authorities in Manitoba are asking residents to keep an eye out for an estimated 8-foot white snake seen slithering through residential yards.

Breno Martins, who lives in the Fort Rouge area of Winnipeg, said he was mowing his lawn Saturday afternoon when he spotted the snake slithering in the grass alongside his house.

"When I saw it I literally freaked out," Martins told CBC News. "I don't know if it's dangerous. I don't know if it's venomous. And I know that we have many pets and kids in the neighborhood.

Martin and his neighbors attempted to keep an eye on the snake while waiting for Winnipeg Animal Services personnel to arrive, but the reptile disappeared into a neighbor's bushes before they arrived.

Police said animal services was not able to locate the serpent and warned nearby residents to be aware of an 8-foot-long snake on the loose in the area.

Rob Vendramelli, a volunteer with the Manitoba Herpetocultural Society, said the snake in photos snapped by Martin appears to be a nonvenomous corn snake.

"They're usually pretty comfortable with being handled, and not dangerous to people," he said.

He said the animal is likely an escaped pet that got away from its owner.

"It was a nice day. Maybe someone had taken their snake out to the back yard to get some sun. Natural sunlight is beneficial to a lot of reptiles," he said.

Animal services chief Leland Gordon said the search for the snake was ongoing Monday.

"We do have our team out. We've gone several times on Saturday, our officers went several times on Sunday, and our animal services officers are going to attend yet again today," Gordon told Global News.

The house in the Roger's Park neighborhood was built in 1891 and was remodeled into a pastel work of art by current owner Jackie Seiden and her husband, Don, who has since died. The couple lived in the house for 47 years.

"The whole house is pastel-colored and glitter from head to toe," Kathy Schrage, the Redfin real estate agent listing the home, told Block Club Chicago. "It's like a Barbie's dream home."

"It's the most eclectic house I've seen in 20 years as a Realtor," she said.

Jackie Seiden previously said the home was an olive green color when she and her husband moved in, and the pastel colors she started using inside the house soon spread to the exterior. The pastel theme even extends to the blinds, radiators and a piano.

Schrage said Seiden would prefer to sell the home to someone who would keep the house's unique elements, but the market will ultimately decide.

The current asking price for the house is $600,000.

Whale swallows lobster diver, rejects him as meal

A Massachusetts lobster diver survived being swallowed up and then spat out by a humpback whale off the coast of Cape Cod, giving him about 40 surreal seconds in the mouth of the large marine animal.

In his own Biblical Jonah and the whale story, Michael Packard said it happened in a flash as he swam in about 45 feet of water one moment before everything turned dark in an instant Friday. Packard said he initially thought he was attacked by a shark but realized he didn't feel like he was bitten and wasn't in any p

That's when he realized he was actually inside the mouth of a whale and fought to locate his breathing regulator fearing he could run out of air and suffocate. But the whale had other plans moments later.

"A humpback whale tried to eat me," Packard told WBTS. "I was in his closed mouth for about 30 to 40 seconds before he rose to the surface and spit me out. I am very bruised up but have no broken bones."

Packard said for those frantic moments, all he could think about was his two young boys and possibly dying inside the whale before the mammal rejected him as a meal.

"I could sense I was moving," he told the Cape Code Times. "I could feel the whale squeezing with the muscles in his mouth."

Doctors released Packard from Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, battered, but no broken bones and one heck of a fish story to tell.

"Setting a dead hang Guinness World Records title was for me the ultimate challenge. I wanted to show both myself and others that it was possible, and I'm thrilled that I succeeded," Riise told Guinness World Records.

Riise, a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy, said he spent more than 10 hours a week training for the record.

"Being a wheelchair user, I am dependent on my upper body strength to cope with everyday physical challenges. My ability to dead hang for instance is, quite literally, what gets me out of bed in the morning," he said.

Riise is also a motivational speaker under the name Viking Wheels.

"Through the concept of Viking Wheels, I hope to inspire people to follow their dreams, no matter what life has in store for them," he said.

Riise's previous accomplishments include hand-cycling nearly 40 miles from Eidsvoll to Oslo and performing pull ups on top of a high-speed trailer.

Goncalves, a lifelong car enthusiast, said the Hornet was the first bike to spark his love of motorcycles.

"For a long time, the appeal of bikes never made much sense to me. But that changed when a friend of my father's arrived with a Hornet. At that moment, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I said to myself: I have to have one of these," Goncalves told Zenger News.

Goncalves, who shares his art projects on his YouTube channel, said his second motorcycle, a BMW R1200, brought him his first viral attention.

"The second bike was the one from the video that went viral, the R1200. It took four months to make. If we compare, the 1200 is much more difficult than the Hornet, but with the 1200, I already had a certain amount of experience, so it was easier to do," he said.

Goncalves said he is now setting his sights on even larger projects, and aspires to eventually build an entire cardboard house.

Animal rescuers in Britain said they are trying to find the owner of an exotic snake found in a drain at a garage workshop.

"This poor snake was found in a drain, but thankfully the staff at the garage spotted him and confined him in a box. I think he's likely to be an escaped pet as he was a decent weight so has clearly had someone looking after him quite recently," Animal Rescue Officer Jade Guthrie said.

Milk snakes are native to North and South America, but they are commonly kept as pets elsewhere.

"Snakes are excellent escape artists so I suspect this milk snake had escaped from a vivarium somewhere, so we are very keen to try and reunite the reptile with the owner," Guthrie said.

The restaurant is holding a naming contest for the robot, with the winning submission earning a $100 gift card.

'Wheel whackers' keep snakes out of planes in California desert

Airline Qantas said engineers maintaining the fleet of A380 superjumbo jets in California's Mojave Desert have taken to using broom handles as "wheel whackers" to keep rattlesnakes out of the planes.

The Australian airline said in a post on its website that engineers have been maintaining the fleet of planes that have been stored in the desert since the COVID-19 pandemic caused air travel to decline sharply, and the team soon discovered the location came with its own challenges.

"The area is well-known for its feisty 'rattlers,' who love to curl up around the warm rubber tires and in the aircraft wheels and brakes," Tim Heywood, Qantas' engineering manager for Los Angeles, said in the post.

He said the engineers came up with a way to avoid confrontations with the venomous rattlesnakes while working on the jets.

"Every aircraft has its own designated 'wheel whacker' (a repurposed broom handle) as part of the engineering kit, complete with each aircraft's registration written on it," Heywood wrote.

He said the method has proven effective in keeping the relationship between the engineers and nature harmonious.

"We've encountered a few rattlesnakes and also some scorpions, but the wheel whacker does its job and they scuttle off," he said. "It's a unique part of looking after these aircraft while they're in storage and it's another sign of how strange the past year has been. These A380s would rarely spend more than a day on the ground when they were in service."

The video recorded by a security camera at Hailey Morinico's family's home in Bradbury, in the San Gabriel Valley, shows three dogs in the enclosed yard becoming agitated and barking at a mother bear and her cubs perched on a brick wall dividing the back yard from a neighbor's property.

The mother bear swats at the dogs as they approach to bark at the wild animals, and Morinico, 17, is then seen running into the yard, shoving the bear off the wall, and gathering up the dogs to bring them inside.

Morinico said she rushed outside when she heard the dogs barking, initially thinking another dog must have approached the yard.

"I run to see what they're barking at and it's not a dog -- it's a bear," she told KTLA-TV.

Morinico said she panicked when she saw the dangerous situation the dogs were in.

"I see the bear, it's grabbing my dog, Valentina, and I have to run over there. She's a baby," the teenager said. "And the first thing I think to do is push the bear. And somehow it worked."

Morinico walked away with only a minor scratch, but she recommended others not attempt to follow her example.

"Do not push bears," she said. "Don't do what I did, you might not have the same outcome."
