'Wheel whackers' keep snakes out of planes in California desert

Airline Qantas said engineers maintaining the fleet of A380 superjumbo jets in California's Mojave Desert have taken to using broom handles as "wheel whackers" to keep rattlesnakes out of the planes.

The Australian airline said in a post on its website that engineers have been maintaining the fleet of planes that have been stored in the desert since the COVID-19 pandemic caused air travel to decline sharply, and the team soon discovered the location came with its own challenges.

"The area is well-known for its feisty 'rattlers,' who love to curl up around the warm rubber tires and in the aircraft wheels and brakes," Tim Heywood, Qantas' engineering manager for Los Angeles, said in the post.

He said the engineers came up with a way to avoid confrontations with the venomous rattlesnakes while working on the jets.

"Every aircraft has its own designated 'wheel whacker' (a repurposed broom handle) as part of the engineering kit, complete with each aircraft's registration written on it," Heywood wrote.

He said the method has proven effective in keeping the relationship between the engineers and nature harmonious.

"We've encountered a few rattlesnakes and also some scorpions, but the wheel whacker does its job and they scuttle off," he said. "It's a unique part of looking after these aircraft while they're in storage and it's another sign of how strange the past year has been. These A380s would rarely spend more than a day on the ground when they were in service."

The video recorded by a security camera at Hailey Morinico's family's home in Bradbury, in the San Gabriel Valley, shows three dogs in the enclosed yard becoming agitated and barking at a mother bear and her cubs perched on a brick wall dividing the back yard from a neighbor's property.

The mother bear swats at the dogs as they approach to bark at the wild animals, and Morinico, 17, is then seen running into the yard, shoving the bear off the wall, and gathering up the dogs to bring them inside.

Morinico said she rushed outside when she heard the dogs barking, initially thinking another dog must have approached the yard.

"I run to see what they're barking at and it's not a dog -- it's a bear," she told KTLA-TV.

Morinico said she panicked when she saw the dangerous situation the dogs were in.

"I see the bear, it's grabbing my dog, Valentina, and I have to run over there. She's a baby," the teenager said. "And the first thing I think to do is push the bear. And somehow it worked."

Morinico walked away with only a minor scratch, but she recommended others not attempt to follow her example.

"Do not push bears," she said. "Don't do what I did, you might not have the same outcome."

Kayaker rescues red squirrel under attack from spawning bass in river

A man fishing on an a New Brunswick, Canada, river noticed some unusual activity in the water and ended up rescuing a red squirrel struggling with some bass

Matt Myers said he was fishing for striped bass on the Miramichi River when he saw a group of bass splashing at the surface of the water.

"I was watching some splashing and all of a sudden I looked to the side and I thought 'What is that in the middle of this spawning activity?'" Myers told CBC News.

He said he initially thought the bass were attacking a stick, but he then realized they were nipping at an animal.

"Lo and behold, it's this poor little red squirrel in the middle of all this spawning activity," Myers said. "The bass appeared to be coming up and nipping at it."

Myers used his paddle to scoop the squirrel up onto his kayak and gave it a ride back to shore.

He said the fish had likely confused the squirrel's splashing for a female preparing to lay her eggs.

"I don't think they were trying to eat it," Myers said.
